Modi's Vision on affordable housing for all
Vinod Chandrashekhar Dixit8/30/2019 10:36:30 PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has recently committed to further improving urban infrastructure and will leave no stone unturned to fulfill the dream of housing for all. Modi had launched the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) to provide affordable housing to the urban poor. Now, people of the country should be in a position to have 'pucca' houses for each one of them. It is not an easy job. But it is possible. We have to make serious efforts for it. PM has emphasized that the government had an incremental view on further improving the urban infrastructure and vowed that no stone will be left unturned in this pursuit. According to an estimate by 2050, almost 50 per cent of population will be in urban areas and it is a challenging task. In India, homelessness is a complex problem; the circumstances of homeless people vary greatly. Affordable housing has become the paramount issue of cities and dense urban areas. When it is estimated that by the year 2050, the country's urban population is set to reach a population of more than 814 million people, one of the biggest challenges faced by the country will be providing affordable housing, sanitation and development, and a safe environment to the city dwellers.
Shelter is the basic human requirement. Even after 62 years of independence, the country is still grappling with the growing shelter problem, especially of the poor. The problem has further been compounded by the rapid increase in urban population. Our PM has a vision and we will give top priority to 100 smart new cities. Smart, safe and better environment, better facilities better connectivity and better living condition for people. That is the concept we are finalizing. There is no doubt that PM Awas Yojana had recorded a massive success over its predecessor, Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, the BJP said, adding that under the Smart Cities initiative, the government had promoted citizen friendly infrastructure - 897 projects in 72 cities. Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Urban) launched in 2015 is the anchor scheme that makes direct intervention for creation of affordable houses in urban areas. The Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) also aims at giving basic civic amenities such as water supply, sewerage, urban transport, parks to improve the quality of life for all especially the poor and the disadvantaged.
It is nice that by 2022, Modi government will ensure that everyone has a house and for this the government has approved 54 lakh houses for people in cities and provided more than one crore houses to the poor in villages. The government has set 2022 as the target year to realize this objective by making specific initiatives for the promotion of urban housing.
PM Modi has rightly said that his government was bound to build a system for future generations where life was based on 5 Es - ease of living, education, employment, economy and entertainment. The housing scheme is not merely a project to provide houses to the poor but a means of women empowerment since houses under the scheme are registered in the name of a woman member of the family or jointly. All these attempts being made by Modi government clearly shows that providing affordable housing is now a development priority. The housing for all by 2022 will ensure every urban poor to enable to own a house.
