GM Bhat conferred upon 'SM Naqvi Gold Medal Award' | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 16: The Geological Society of India (GSI), Bangalore, at its annual General Body meeting in the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, conferred the prestigious S. M. Naqvi Gold Medal Award on Prof. Ghulam Mohd. Bhat of the Geology Department, University of Jammu, Jammu. The award was presented to Prof. Bhat for his outstanding contribution in providing a renewed understanding on the evolution of Permian-Triassic (P-T) sequence across the mass extinction event units (during which more than 95 % of the marine life forms and 75% of the terrestrial life forms became extinct), and associated Panjal Traps (volcanic rocks depicting magmatic activity) of Kashmir, identifying the chemistry of these 252 million years old rocks, and the fossils within them. Prof. Bhat (and the team he worked with) provided a significant insight into the understanding of these rocks and physical processes that shaped them through time and space. He identified breaks in the fossil continuity across the P-T boundary transition coinciding with carbon isotope shifting, depicting large scale climatic and tectonic turnover during this time. |
