Rigidity won't help

Jammu & Kashmir administration shifting more than 30 Kashmir-centric leaders from posh Centaur Hotel on the banks of Dal Lake to MLA Hostel in Srinagar is an indication that these leaders won't be bailed out soon.
Soon after centre reorganized Jammu & Kashmir on 5 August this year, more than 40 Kashmiri leaders from the mainstream political parties were arrested and detained at Centaur Hotel. A few of them were set free after they signed the bond assuring the government that they won't indulge in any such activity which could lead to law and order problems.
It has been more than 100 days when these leaders including three former Chief Ministers of the erstwhile state of J&K- Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti were taken into preventive custody. Many people were of the belief that these leaders will be set free within a few days but it has not happened. Their detention has been prolonged due to one major reason that they are not ready to give written assurance.
To begin with these leaders have been shifted from a posh facility to a hostel and if they continue to remain adamant there is every possibility about them being shifted to central jail.
These leaders should realize that times have changed and they can not dictate the terms anymore. If they don't show flexibility then there could be no light at the end of the tunnel. They may have to spend more months or even years in the confinement as the Government of India has made it clear that no talks will be held with anyone and especially those who used to challenge J&K's accession with the Union of India. The leaders of mainstream parties in Kashmir have been left with the very few options. If they want to remain relevant in the politics of new Jammu & Kashmir which has started functioning as the Union Territory since October 31 then they will have to mend their ways and join the national mainstream. If they don't do that then jail is the only option. Ones who don't want to stay here can move out from the country and do something else. Their brand of politics has no takers nor would it be allowed in the new India. The ball is in their court and they have to take a call.
