Health awareness session organized at MV International School | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Jan 22: Seminar and Counselling Session on ‘Sanitary based Health Awareness’ was organized for the girl students of classes 6th to 8th along with their mothers at MV International School. The session was conducted by Dr. Sadhana Sharma, Retd. Professor of PG Department of Government Medical College, Jammu. Mensuration is still a taboo subject to talk and discuss in Indian Society. The session emphasized on the importance of personal hygiene practices especially during menstrual cycle. The event was organized as a part of British Council International School Award (ISA) activity. Dr. Sadhana said that, unhygienic practices in personal care especially during this time can result into severe health problems ranging from internal allergies and infections to infertility and cervical cancer in extreme cases. There were talks on how and why the females menstruate. Participants shared the kind of problems they face during periods and also the kind of myths and practices that are prevalent in their communities. They were told about the importance of using garments made of cotton fabric, drying them in sunlight and changing sanitary napkins regularly. Some of the myths like not eating rice, milk etc. during the periods were broken during the discussion. Mothers of participating girl students expressed satisfaction about the conduct of the program.
