Citizen Forum expresses concerns over health issues of school children | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 29: Citizen's Forum appealed the LG G C Murmu and Dr. Jitendra Singh the MOS that only order of checking the health of school children twice a year is just a joke by the Health Department. It requires a complete survey to find out the extent of malnutrition in School Children of the UT, particularly of the rural areas. 36 Ministers visiting the UT, no one discussed problem of malnutrition, anemia, deficiency of vitamin A, and Iodine which is very common among the school children. The Center Government surveys point out that today, 94 percent children in the age group of 6-9 are mildly, moderately or severely underweight. Adolescent girls suffer from anemia due to Iron and Folic Acid deficiency. R K Chadha President Citizen's Forum said that a poor school child needs 2400 calories of energy per day where as he gets less than 300 calories from the MID-DAY meals per day that too only during school days. A poor family cannot afford to provide balance 2000 calories food every day for their children. Center Government has emphasized the implementation of MID-DAY MEALS in its common minimum programs and It also mentions the setting up of an appropriate mechanism for quality checks. Despite all this MID-DAY- MEALS constitute rice and dal or only Rice with salt in this J&K UT. Experts demand minimum 800 - 900 calories per day be given in MID-DAY meals in schools to compensate food given at homes of the poor children.
