Early Times Report

Anantnag, June 8: Militants on Monday shot dead a Kashmiri Pandit Sarpanch in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Slain Kashmiri Pandit Sarpanch, who has been identified as Aajay Pandita (Bharti), was attacked near his residence in Lukbhawan Larkipora village of Dooru Assembly segment.
He was rushed to Government Medical College Anantnag for treatment, however doctors at the hospital declared him ‘brought dead’.
Medical Superintend GMC Anantnag Dr Majid Mehrab said that slain had received bullet injuries on left shoulder and face. “He was brought dead and had bullet injuries on face and left shoulder,” he said.
A police officer told Early Times that area was immediately cordoned off and a manhunt was launched to nab the assailants. “We have cordoned off the area and sought technical help for nabbing terrorists,” he said.
35 year old Aajay Pandita was associated with Indian National Congress (INC) and had contested Panchayat election on congress ticket.
Congress state President Ghulam Ahmad Mir condemned the killing and claimed that slain Sarpanch was feeling unsafe from last two months.
“He expressed concerns about his safety and had conveyed same to the authorities through his own means,” Ghulam Ahmad Mir told a local news gathering agency.
Sources revealed to Early Times that the slain Sarpanch had approached authorities and demanded security cover, however he hasn’t provided.
On August 4, last year, Jammu and Kashmir Government withdrew security cover of all mainstream politicians particularly in Kashmir and put them under detention. The security cover of top leaders was also degraded.
“Militants have attacked me on multiple occasions and I continue to be their target but sadly the government has failed to help nationalist like us by providing us required security so that we can visit our homes or start political activities,” a politician told ET.
He urged Union Government to reconsider the decision and provide security to all those nationalists who want to serve the people and country on ground level.
