Most Kashmir centric leaders detained after August 5, 2019—when Centre announced its decision to abrogate J&K’s special status and bifurcated it into two union territories — have been released. Only a few more are under detention. The leaders who continue to be under detention are not in ordinary jails but have been lodged in government accommodations. Most of them are in posh bungalows. Despite them being provided all the facilities, their colleagues leave no opportunity to play a victim card to gain sympathy of the people. Recently, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah spilled the beans and made it public that NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar and PDP leader, Naeem Akther, are under detention in a posh government accommodation at Gupkar Road in Srinagar. He demanded their immediate release. Kashmir centric leaders who were detained post August 5, 2019 are trying to project themselves as the big leaders, contrary to the ground realities. Soon after these leaders were arrested, they had expected that people will come out on streets to seek their release and Kashmir will burn but nothing of that sort happened and people didn’t react to them being put under detention. The ones who served detention and the ones who are still under detention were not treated as ordinary prisoners. They were taken due care off and they enjoyed all the facilities in the places where they were kept. So, calling them detainees is not at all justified. Another former J&K chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti, who continues to remain booked under Public Safety Act, is enjoying all the comforts within the four walls of her Gupkar residence in Srinagar. As the political activities have got revived to some extent, the politicians are trying to drive home a point that after remaining in detention their stature has become tall and they are the true representatives of the people. But the fact remains that they are no leaders as they managed to win the elections during the times when polling percentage in Kashmir used to be very low. As on date they stand on crossroads as nothing seems to be working out for them. Despite these leaders having dropped enough hints that they are in no mood to flog the dead horse people in the national capital appear to be in mood to give them another chance. The bottomline seems that they can more call themselves as leaders. |
