Battered Congress in a soup
7/15/2020 12:12:54 AM

Congress party that has been on crossroads in J&K for a longtime seems to have changed its tactics. It appears to be an attempt to tell the people of Jammu that it has not abandoned their cause.
The tactic shift in Congress’s stand was evident on July 13 when the party did not issue any statement on the episode of July 13, 1931, and remained silent. For the past 70-years the party used to issue the statement on this day and even the Congress representatives’ used to visit the graveyard in Srinagar to pay tributes to the people who were killed on this day in 1931.
It seems Congress took 70-years to realize that appeasing Kashmir centric leaders and parties has not helped their cause. In the past the party succeeded in sharing the power in J&K after winning maximum of the assembly seats from Jammu region. But people of Jammu have taught Congress a lesson by rejecting it. Since 2014 the party has not won a single parliamentary seat in Jammu region. And its performance in the last assembly elections was dismal. The fact of the matter is that the Congress could never make inroads in Kashmir and always depended upon Jammu to fulfill its political ambitions.
It appears that the Congress leadership has realized that going out of way to appease Kashmir did not serve any purpose in the past neither will it serve any purpose in the future. The grand old party of the country seems to have silently accepted the abrogation of Article 370 as well the scrapping of a holiday on July 13.
The Congress leaders, who have not been that active for the past many years, seem to have understood the fact that if they have to revive their party then they will have to stand with Jammu’s cause rather than projecting themselves as pro-Kashmir. The delimitation process has already commenced and once the pandemic is over, elections in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will be held. Congress knows it very well that it can’t win many seats in Kashmir and if it has to become relevant then it has to focus on Jammu. The party leaders need to bear it in mind that they can’t just keep on harping Kashmir, Kashmir and expect people of Jammu to vote for them. The Congress has realized its mistake but after a long time. In the process it has allowed many other political parties to move ahead. The party will have to work very hard to once again emerge as one of the frontline parties in the J&K UT. Many people believe that Congress has become a history in J&K and its revival looks difficult.
