Early Times Report

Srinagar, July 16: Business and other activities remained crippled in Srinagar, where fresh lockdown was imposed in over 60 containment zones on Monday following a surge in coronavirus cases over the past one week. Srinagar witnessed over 140 positive cases on Wednesday, forcing authorities to further tighten the restriction. Police and security forces had established road blocks at several places in the city to prevent any movement. The main bridge connecting Mehjoor Nagar with Rajbagh, Jawahar Nagar and Kursoo has been closed or any movement.
Concerned over the surge in Coronavirus positive cases, the District Magistrate (DM) Dr Shahid Choudhary imposed lockdown from Monday, when he also increased the fine to Rs 1000 to Rs 10000 for not wearing masks. However, even on Thursday some people were seen moving without wearing masks, including in the uptown and down town. However, situation in the civil lines and adjacent areas was different as majority people, including women were seen wearing masks.
‘We will have to carve out containment zones for effective restrictions in different areas of Srinagar,’ DM said, adding local cooperation is solicited in best interest of public health to prevent further spread of virus. Shops and other business establishments remained closed and public transport was off the roads. Large number of security forces and police personnel remained deployed to strictly impose the lockdown. The Amira Kadal and Gaw Kadal bridges are closed with barbed wire to prevent any traffic movement. However, pedestrians were being allowed from footpath of these bridges.
Though police has set up nakas on many roads on Moulana Azad road and other areas, the Jehangir Chowk- Rambagh and Budshah bridge-Civil secretariat fly-over are open and private vehicles, including two wheelers, could be seen plying. Situation in the downtown was no different as shops and other business establishments remained closed and traffic off the roads. Srinagar has 2086 positive cases, including 153 cases reported on Wednesday with 1488 Active Positive. However, 549 have recovered, including 19 cases yesterday, an official spokesman said adding 49 have also died due to this virus.
