Traffic resumes on Srinagar-Jammu highway, Leh and Mughal roads through
7/22/2020 10:30:04 PM
Early times Report

Srinagar, July 22: Traffic was on Wednesday resumed on the national highway, the only all weather road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, after remaining suspended on Tuesday due to shooting stones and landslides, triggered by rain.
Meanwhile, 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway and 86-km-long historic Mughal road are through for traffic and only vehicles carrying essentials and fruit are allowed to ply as passenger traffic remained suspended due to COVID-19 pandemic.
A traffic police official told this morning that traffic on the highway was suspended on Tuesday following landslides and shooting stones at Penthal and other places. However, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) put into service sophisticated machines and men and landslides were cleared till late last night.
Traffic was resumed only this morning on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, he said. However, he said Kashmir bound trucks and other vehicles, carrying essentials besides oil tankers which were stranded on the highway were allowed to move towards their respective destinations this morning.
Once all stranded vehicles will be cleared, fresh traffic will be allowed from Kashmir to Jammu, he said. However, since passenger traffic is banned due to COVID-19 only vehicles carrying essentials and empty trucks are allowed to move from here to Jammu, he said.
He said security forces are advised to undertake journey only after confirming status of the road from Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) national highway.
He said the historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region was through for one-way traffic. Since no passenger traffic is allowed on this road, only vehicles carrying fresh fruit can ply from 1100 hrs to 1600 hrs from Heerpora, Shopian towards other side of the Pir-ki-Gali. No vehicle will be allowed after the deadline, he said.
Only vehicles, carrying essential commodities are allowed to ply from Sonamarg in the central Kashmir on the national highway, the only road linking Ladakh region with Kashmir, he said. No passenger vehicle will be allowed on the highway, he said.
