Farmers suffer as heavy storm, rainfall destroys maize crops

UDHAMPUR, July 26: The heavy storm and rain have destroyed maize crops in several Udhampur villages including Phangial due to which the farmers suffered substantial losses.
Demanding compensation, the affected farmers said that every year they suffer such losses but nobody from Agriculture or Revenue Department ever approached them to estimate their losses.
Ram Rattan, a farmer from Phangial said two days back his maize crop got completely damaged due to heavy rain and wind storm.
Rattan said that three years back he had availed KCC loan but due to losses in subsequent years due to damage to his crops he is not in a position to pay back the loan installments, adding that the ongoing lockdown and restrictions have further compounded the problems. He demanded that the authorities should waive off his loan along with the interest as he is not having any other source of income which could enable him to pay back the loan.
Meanwhile, Santosh Kumari, Sarpanch Panchayat Halqa Phangial said, many farmers have suffered crop losses due to inclement weather and appealed to the authorities concerned to compensate them for the damages.
When contacted, Rajnish Magotra, concerned official, said that first of all they will check the spot to access losses then case of compensation will be taken up.
