So Mr Omar Abdullah can contest Panch, Sarpanch and Parliament elections!

Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 10: Even as former Chief Minister and National Conference President Omar Abdullah recently declared that he won’t contest Assembly elections unless the statehood is restored, the simple point seems that he has kept other options of contesting elections open.
Going by the statement of Omar, he can contest other elections -be it that of local urban bodies or the Parliament elections because he has nowhere been averse to those elections.
“As for me, I am very clear that while J&K remains a Union Territory I will not be contesting any Assembly elections. Having been a member of the most empowered Assembly in the land and that, too, as the leader of that Assembly for six years, I simply cannot and will not be a member of a House that has been disempowered the way ours has,” Omar recently said in his write up for the national media.
Observers say the point remains that if Omar was so concerned about the non-participation in elections why he mentioned only the Assembly elections.
The question makes sense because in the past, Omar has contested Parliament elections and has also remained a junior minister in the then NDA led government.
A political analyst said Omar has made a joke of his commitment by mentioning Assembly elections in particular.
“Going by his pledge, he can very easily contest Panch, Sarpanch and Parliament elections as he has kept all such options open,” said the analyst.
The debate over statehood picked up in Jammu and Kashmir only after senior Bharatiya Janta Party leader Ram Madhav visited Kashmir in the middle of July to visit the family of slain BJP leader Wasim Bari.
After the visit, Madhav hinted at grant of statehood while the regional parties joined the chorus.
At first a newly floated party gave a press conference in Jammu demanding statehood only to be followed by the National Conference and others.
Despite repeated attempts, Omar Abdullah was no available for comments.
