Get ready for elections
8/16/2020 11:43:40 PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech assured that assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir would be held after the delimitation exercise is completed. PM’s assurance is a signal for the politicians in Jammu and Kashmir that they should put their act together and get ready for the poll process. The last assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014. The fractured mandate given by the people that time led to PDP and BJP joining hands to form the government in the erstwhile State. However, in 2018 the BJP pulled out from the government following which J&K was put under President’s rule. After that Centre took major decisions vis-à-vis J&K, the erstwhile State was bifurcated into two union territories the special status was abrogated and delimitation commission was constituted. The newly carved out Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is entirely different from the erstwhile State which existed till August 5, 2019. Now, we have a Lieutenant Governor at place without whose consent, Kashmir centric politicians won’t be able to take any decisions. The LG is the Boss. Last month Kashmir centric parties had tried to raise the pitch to seek the restoration of J&K’s statehood. Former chief minister, Omar Abdullah had stated that he won’t contest the elections till J&K’s statehood is restored. His statement had triggered a row within his party. NC chief spokesman Aga Ruhullah had tendered resignation after Omar Abdullah’s statement claiming that NC has accepted revocation of Article 370. After Ruhullah’s reaction Omar retracted from his statement and started criticizing Centre’s August 5 decision. But it was a clear attempt to control the damage. Prime Minister Narendra Modi from ramparts of Red Fort has thrown the ball in the court of J&K politicians and is now for them to take the call. If they have to remain relevant they will have to contest the elections even if the statehood is not restored. If they fail to join the fray they will again miss the bus and will head towards complete irrelevance. No politician can remain relevant if he or she keeps on staying away from the political process.
Kashmir centric politicians should realize that election boycott days are over. If they have to win they will have to strive for it and get votes by telling truth to people. They can no more raise hollow slogans and expect people to follow them blindly. Political process is all set to commence and the players should get ready.
