Srinagar Jhelum banks under radar of security agencies
8/29/2020 12:28:04 AM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 28: In the wake of sudden spike in the militancy related incidents in Kashmir, the inhabited banks of river Jhelum in the summer capital have come under scanner of the security agencies.
Sources said in the last few months, the security forces have undertaken numerous Cordon and Search Operations in the summer capital of Srinagar along the banks of this river.
Sources said the security establishment has inputs that terror groups were trying to create base on the banks of Jhelum especially in the civil lines.
“They want to establish sleeper cells on the banks of Jhelum,” said a source in the establishment on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said though intelligence agencies have been getting frequent inputs about possible presence of militants along the river banks, till now any breakthrough is awaited.
“There have been CASOs in the areas especially along the banks between Poloview and Amira Kadal but till any major breakthrough is awaited,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
It is pertinent to mention that though police recently said that no militant from Srinagar was active anymore, on August 14 deadly attack left two policemen dead on the outskirts of the city.
Security analysts believe that militants are desperate to reestablish their base in the summer capital such that Kashmir remains in news.
“Once militants get active in city it creates a big news and puts emphases on the so called Kashmir issue and this is what they want,” said a retired police official. To mention, at least three deadly encounters have taken place in Srinagar in the last three months including the one on the highway.
When contacted a senior official said the forces were fully prepared to thwart any attempt of militants to create any new base in the summer capital.
He said patrolling along the banks was a regular exercise.
