EARLY TIMES REPORT

POONCH, Aug 30: It has been twenty years since the tragedy took place over a family in Mendhar of district Poonch, wherein seven of its members were killed by the militants including children but till date justice has not been done due to negligence of the successive governments, who handled the matter with a myopic view.
The family members, who survived from the militant attack including Roop Lal and Rattan Lal told Early Times that it has been 20 years but incumbent as well as the previous governments failed to deliver justice to the family, which lost its seven members.
“My family was killed by militants including my aged parents, my son, his wife and children during night on July 2, 1999. We were targeted as a minority in the area. We were assured that justice will be done including compensation and jobs next to the kin,” said Roop Lal, father of slain Kuldeep Kumar.
Rattan Lal, brother of slain Kuldeep Kumar said that the then Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah had promised three jobs and compensation but after a lot of struggle, one of his brothers got a job and another brother was killed.
“Although I was qualified, my file was not cleared and no compensation was given to us. Despite directions to pay Rs 35 lakhs as compensation nothing has been given to us,” Rattan Lal said further adding that they had spent over Rs 10 lakhs on litigation to get justice for their killed family members. He appealed to the Lieutenant Governor to intervene into the matter so that justice will be done.
