Fatehpur people face acute water scarcity, allege misappropriation of WSS funds

EARLY TIMES REPORT

POONCH, Sept 1: Drinking water is one of the basic rights of every citizen in any civilized society but it has become a luxury for Fatehpur people in district Poonch as they are facing acute scarcity of drinking water due to the erratic supply.
According to some locals of Dhara and Fatehpur, there was a Water Supply Scheme (WSS) which is in shambles for long, thanks to the apathetic attitude of the employees of the PHE Department.
They informed that, neither the Junior Engineer nor the Supervisor have been paying any attention for proper maintenance of the Water Supply Scheme since long while daily wagers engaged for the project demand pecuniary benefits from the consumers in order to ensure water supply especially when there is any death, marriage or other social gatherings. The locals said that the government has invested crores for this Water Supply Scheme but people are still deprived for a drop of drinking water.
“Although Executive Engineer and other concerned officials of the department have been informed about the matter and people have appealed them to conduct inquiry of the released funds and their utilization, but no action was initiated,” they said.
“Despite several pleas high ranked officers are not conducting any enquiry into the matter which shows that they may also be involved in the embezzlement,” they added.
Locals, especially those who have no approach and poor people are without drop of water where as some influential and land lords are enjoying uninterrupted water supply. Locals have appealed to Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir to intervene into the matter and direct concerned department to constitute a team of officers to investigate the matter and punish guilty officers under law.
Executive Engineer PHE Poonch in his official statement assured strong action against negligent officials after thorough investigation into the matter.
