Need doctors in hospitals
9/5/2020 12:16:57 AM
The Jammu and Kashmir High Court calling for immediate halt to the private practice of doctors and asking the administration to “seriously examine” the matter is a significant observation which cannot be ignored.
The court’s direction has come at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic is at its peak and people are finding it hard to keep themselves safe.
The doctors working in government hospitals indulging in private practice has always been a matter of debate.
The political dispensations in erstwhile J&K State made many attempts to ban the private practice of doctors but these regimes couldn’t succeed. The ban couldn’t be imposed due to one or other reason.
In the COVID-19 times, need is being felt to keep the doctors confined to hospitals only and the High Court has initiated the process. Now, it’s upto the administration to examine the matter and act.
More than anywhere else doctors are needed in the hospitals. They utilizing their times in private clinics amidst pandemic is a major cause concern and many people are opposing it.
The Bench of Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Puneet Gupta has stated that “judicial notice” can be taken of the fact that employment opportunities in J&K are by far extremely few and large number of people are without financial resources while health facilities are either not available or insufficient.
The observation of the court that many people are without the financial resources is an important point.
Patients who visit the private clinics have to pay for everything and at times they can’t afford the treatment. However, in the government hospitals cost of treatment is not that high. The ones who can afford do go for the private treatment but the ones who cannot have to wait in long queues for their turn in the government hospitals.
The helmsmen need to take a call over this issue and ensure that hospitals don’t face the staff shortage so that the patients don’t die for want of treatment. This could become possible only if the strength of doctors is increased in the hospitals.
A mechanism has to be put in place to ensure that doctors remain committed to their jobs and work sincerely.
This could be done by inculcating sense of responsibility towards the patients and sense of belonging to their department. The administration needs to give a thought to this formula.
