Don’t put lives of children at risk | | | The government mulling to reopen the schools has stirred a Hornet’s Nest. Many parents have said that they won’t send their children as the COVID-19 cases are surging and the experts have warned that reopening of the educational institutions can trigger a new wave of infections. According to media reports United States recorded about 97000 cases of infection within two weeks of school reopening, while in Israel second wave of infection was directly linked to opening of schools. During the past fortnight the COVID-19 cases have witnessed an unprecedented spike in Jammu and Kashmir and it seems that another severe wave of infections has gripped the Union Territory. Reopening schools amidst surge in cases is not a good idea. It can have far reaching consequences. One cannot expect the children to follow social distancing and the SOPs as children are children. Most of the people are of the opinion that schools should not be reopened till the vaccine comes. There is no doubt about the fact that education sector has suffered immense losses and students have been at the receiving end. The education can be compensated once the COVID is over but if lives are lost it can lead to a catastrophe. The general consensus is that the decision to reopen the schools should be deferred for time being. At least till the children are vaccinated and they develop immunity to fight COVID-19. In Jammu division situation has worsened as the number of cases have multiplied. Hospitals are overcrowded and the authorities are grappling to accommodate the increasing number of patients. Oxygen plants in Jammu hospitals not being able to cater to the high end ventilators too has added to the worries of people as well as the authorities. There were reports that Union Education Ministry may defer its decision to reopen the schools from 9th to 12th standards as it has triggered a huge debate. If the decision is not deferred the parents seem determined not to send children to educational institutions at this point of time. Now, it’s for the government to decide whether to take a chance or not. The feedback from the ground has not been that positive and the government is very much aware about it. The bottomline is that no one would like to put the lives of children at risk. |
