Won’t be responsible if student catches COVID: SED to parents
Bizarre!

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 21: The latest order issued by the School Education Department about the re-opening of the schools in Jammu and Kashmir has put the Education Department in quandary as the contents of the consent letter which parents have to sign before sending their wards to school are bizarre.
People in unison across Jammu and Kashmir are questioning the logic behind such a meaningless and badly drafted letter in accordance to which parents have to sign a virtual bond that in case their ward gets infected by COVID-19, they would not be holding the school authorities responsible in any manner.
According to the content of the letter of consent prepared by the School Education Department, the parents have been asked to give an undertaking that they will be personally responsible if there is any untoward incident like coronavirus infection with their ward. “I undertake that I will not blame anybody in the school for any incident of COVID-19 infection” reads the undertaking to be signed by the parents.
Parents and common masses are meanwhile up in arms against such content, stating that the Education Department has made a mockery of itself and what they are asking from the parents is illogical. “You mean if anything happens to my child in a school amid the prevalent pandemic, it is me who shall be responsible for it. What is going on in our administrative circles? Who is passing these bizarre diktats? It is akin to objectifying the students and turning them into mere entities whose safety is in no way responsibility of the school authorities and the government,” said an aggrieved parent.
The MHA and H&FW department earlier issued the guidelines wherein it allowed the partial resumption of activities in schools on a voluntary basis from September 21.
The schools will reopen for students from class 9th to 12th. The government has also planned that the teachers of other classes will attend their schools on a rotation basis. Principal Secretary, School Education Department, Asgar Samoon, said that schools will reopen from Monday for consultation not for regular classes. “It will be voluntary for secondary and 12 class students to join on consent of their parents. There will be 50 percent teachers on roster as per MHA lockdown-4 guidelines and Ministry of health and Family Welfare,” he said. “Protocols conveyed by chief secretary are circulated to DCs, directors and CEOs,” he said.
Parents are also opposing the order because of its cryptic content. According to them, instead of making the fight against the ongoing pandemic as a basic objective, the Education Department is busy passing the buck. “This is utterly irresponsible mode of functioning,” said a Jammu based parent.
Meanwhile, as per the sources, the government after facing widespread resentment over its confusing order, is all set to revoke it and issue a detailed clarification in this regard.
