Surgeries being performed in erstwhile district hospital, patients forced to visit Jammu
GMC Kathua no better than District Hospital
10/11/2020 11:50:13 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 11: Performance of Government Medical College Kathua is no better than a District Hospital, at least in case of conducting surgeries of Ortho, ENT and others, as the hospital is still performing surgeries in the erstwhile district hospital, forcing the patients to visit Jammu or private hospitals.
Sources informed Early Times that the staff deputed to make Government Medical College Kathua functional has been working from the premises of District Hospital Kathua but despite change of status, the Medical College has been unable to conduct major surgeries of Ortho, ENT beside other wings etc. The hospital is presently performing regular surgeries of Gyneocology and some other minor surgeries, which could be done as per the available resources, sources informed.
“The deputed staff has been still performing minor surgeries and if someone broke his leg, the GMC Kathua is unable to perform surgery of the patient and send him/her for the surgery to either Jammu or Kathua,” sources said, adding that it forced the patients to move towards private hospitals in Pathankot or in Jammu for surgeries.
“There seems a nexus between the staff of the hospital as well as private hospitals as the patients have to shell out huge money to get themselves treated at private hospitals. Some doctors also got commission from the private hospitals for sending patients to them”, an official alleged, adding that it was a serious question on part of GMC Kathua authorities as well as government as if the Medical college was allotted in Kathua, then why there were no surgeries conducted there and there was huge referral of patients to either Jammu or to private hospitals.
“Under the pretext of COVID-19 pandemic, the doctors in government hospitals have been denying to perform surgeries in government hospitals. But bones have been broken even during the lockdown and poor people have been denied surgeries in government hospitals. However, on the other hand private hospitals have been conducting surgeries as per their normal routine and have been earning huge money”, a patient said, adding that the private hospitals have enhanced their fee, which could not be questioned by poor patients as if someone question the same he was shown the door.
Incharge Head of Department of Orthopaedics at GMC Kathua Dr Rishab Gupta said that the department has been conducting the surgeries, which could be done with the available machinery. “We need specialized instruments for conducting surgeries of ortho but so far the supply of instruments have not been made to the GMC Kathua, due to which surgeries have not been conducted,” Dr Gupta said, adding that they have been operating from the operation theatres of District Hospital while the specialized machinery as well as surgical instruments to conduct the critical surgeries, require special Operation theatres, proper infrastructure.
Once the instruments would be made available, the department would start conducting most of the surgeries, Dr Gupta said, adding that they have forwarded the requisition to Jammu and Kashmir Medical Supplies Corporation (JKMSCL), which was in the process of procurement.
Managing Director of JKMSCL, Dr Yashpaul Sharma said that though the process of procuring machines as well as specialized instruments took time but the GMC authorities could purchase those instruments on their own through GOM portal and those which were not available with the JKMSCL. Dr Sharma further assured that he would properly into the matter and take necessary actions.
