EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Oct 26: After the School Education Department issued new directions to avail scholarships, the students particularly those of the government schools as well as their parents belonging to poor families got into a tizzy as around eleven documents have been sought by the department to be eligible for the benefit.
Sources told Early Times that the process of collecting and preparing a list of the beneficiary students by the respective schools has almost stalled due to inability of most of the parents to get these documents from the various departments.
“Around 3-4 documents alone pertained to the Revenue Department, and some from the Social Welfare Department but due to COVID-19 pandemic, parents have been facing huge difficulty in getting these documents from the department, which has almost become an uphill task for them,” they said.
Some parents, on the condition of anonymity, informed the Early Times that they are feeling dejected due to new rules wherein long list of documents including Category Certificate, Income Certificate, Domicile Certificate, Addhar card, Bank Account etc. have been demanded by the School department for availing scholarship.
“We have made several visits to the Revenue Department for getting Category, Income, Domicile Certificates, Aadhaar Card but every time we have been asked the that the concerned officer is not present in the office due to COVID-19 duties,” they said further adding that they work as labourer and had to skip work for whole day and moreover have to spend huge fare to reach to the concerned offices.
Earlier, the list of the beneficiaries used to be prepared by the concerned School Administration after verifying facts through local people but now the government has asked to produce different types of the documents as per central government direction for making the process digital.
They further said that the School Department should give relaxation in production of certificates due to COVID pandemic and the lists of students provided by the Head of Institutions should be accepted till the time. “Sufficient time should be given to the parents for producing documents in the larger interest of the poor students,” they added.
Despite repeated attempts, the Director School Education Jammu could not be contacted for her version.
