Bete-noire join hands
11/12/2020 11:54:31 PM
Bete-noire in Kashmir have come together to contest the forthcoming District Development Commission (DDC) elections. The political parties which till the recent past couldn’t even stand each other have formed a common platform Peoples Democratic Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) to contest the maiden polls being held in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
The PAGD comprises seven mainstream Kashmir centric parties, including National Conference, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Conference and others. These political formations have decided to field only one candidate of the alliance in each DDC constituency.
The first set of candidates has already filed their nomination papers for the first phase of the DDC polls slated to be held on November 28.
The Kashmir centric parties which till August 5, 2019, couldn’t even stand each other are projecting themselves as a single entity. Kashmir centric politicians are pretending that they have buried the hatchet and have turned into a one unit.
These are the same parties that used to taunt each other for one or other reason.
Not long back, chairman of the Peoples Conference, Sajad Gani Lone, had aborted the attempt of NC, PDP and Congress to form a government in the erstwhile J&K State. But as on date Lone is the spokesman of the PAGD, the alliance is headed by NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti is his deputy.
After the Centre revoked J&K’s special status and divided the erstwhile State into two union territories, the Valley based leaders were left dumb founded they didn’t know how to react to the situation. All their slogans were snatched and the blatant lies which they preached for the past seven decades were exposed. Constituents of PAGD are aware of the fact that they don’t have any locus- standi as people have not supported any of their moves. The leaders of these parties are aware of the fact that they can’t do anything alone as the masses in Kashmir have rejected their politics. Now, as a facing saving measure they have come together to make an attempt to once again gain entry into the power corridors.
The cracks within the PAGD have been visible from the day the alliance was formed. The PAGD leaders have been issuing contradictory statements and seem to be unhappy with each other. For time being they have entered into a marriage of convenience but there is every possibility about it not lasting for a longtime.
