NC-PDP ‘cold war’ after Mehbooba’s visit to nomad community
11/25/2020 12:05:55 AM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 24: The recent surprise visit of former Chief Minister and the Peoples Democratic Party, president, Mehbooba Mufti to the tribal community in the upper reaches of Pahalgam in south Kashmir has left the National Conference allegedly annoyed. Whereas both the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party are key constituents of the so called Gupkar alliance, Mehbooba’s visit to the area, without taking the NC into confidence, is understood to have annoyed latter’s leadership.
Sources said some senior leaders from the NC were also planning to the visit the Pahalgam belt as they were “directly related to the nomads.”
“NC leaders have relations in the nomad community but to take extra mileage she went ahead and this proved a hiccup,” said a political analyst.
He said the leaders from the nomad community should have been given a chance to visit the area first.
Sources said the NC leadership wants the Abdullahs to pick up the issue with Mehbooba.
On November 17, in a surprise move, Mehbooba Mufti visited the upper reaches of Pahalgam in Anantnag district and met people whose ‘Dhoks’ (temporary shelters) were allegedly demolished by authorities as part of an anti-encroachment drive.
The PDP president had said it was disconcerting to see nomads being “harassed and displaced” across Jammu and Kashmir and sought Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha’s intervention to ensure that this stops.
The next day in a tweet, she said, “Disconcerting to see nomads across J&K being harassed & displaced. They’ve been the rightful inhabitants & are now being evicted on discriminatory grounds. Kindly intervene @manojsinha_ & ensure that this stops”.
The NC leaders are annoyed. “She tried to gain mileage out of a non issue and tried to make a mountain out of molehill but only at the cost of other parties who have stakes in such areas,” said a politician on the condition of anonymity.
Despite repeated attempts the concerned were not available for comments.
