Show Some Respect | | | A picture of an elderly man standing in front of the officials in a government office to make himself heard has once again brought to fore the VIP culture prevalent in Jammu and Kashmir. The picture went viral on the social media evoking sharp reactions from the netizens. It’s unfortunate that despite all the officers sitting on luxurious chairs the elderly man was not offered a chair to sit. He was kept standing as if he had appeared in the court of a monarch and the king, his courtiers were listening to him. The question is when will this VIP culture end in the government offices? How long will be a common man treated as a “poor subject” who has no rights? Many people were hoping that after J&K’s transition into a Union Territory situation will change and what used to happen in the past won’t be repeated again. But the same trend is continuing and it appears that nothing has changed. After taking over the reins of Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has in clear terms told the officials that serving the people should be their moto and addressing the public grievances has to be their priority. It seems that officials still believe that they can do anything and get away with it. They should realize that they are public servants and get their salaries from the hard earned money of a common man, who is made to pay the taxes through his nose. One cannot deny the fact that work culture in offices has improved post August 5, 2019 but still lot needs to be done to send a clear message across the board that people can neither be ignored, nor ill-treated. Public servants should realize that they are paid for addressing the issues of a common man and they can’t make him stand like an accused to be heard. If this VIP culture doesn’t change it can lead to disillusionment among the masses. The change which the Centre had promised after the abrogation of Article 370 has to be felt on the ground. Mere lip service is not enough. Officials, who behave as monarchs, need to be identified and told in clear terms that their actions are unacceptable. No one can be allowed to treat a common man shabbily. Helmsmen have to learn to respect the common people who come to them with lot of expectations and hopes. |
