Anti-graft agencies on move
12/3/2020 11:37:24 PM
The anti-graft agencies that used to be toothless tigers in the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State have become active and vibrant since J&K’s transition into a union territory.
These agencies are registering cases almost on daily basis and the culprits are being booked. Even the challans are being presented on the regular basis. Many cases that were closed seem to have been reopened and the people who have amassed wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income are being asked where did they get so much money from.
The rechristening of State Vigilance Organization as Anti-Corruption Bureau and the jurisdiction of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) getting extended to J&K has had its impact on the people who used to believe that they can get away with anything.
Pro-active approach of the Anti-Corruption Bureau and other agencies is giving sleepless nights to the people who during their tenure had ignored serious issues.
In absence of political interference many big fishes have been nailed during the past few months. Big shots, who used to think that they are above the law, have been questioned and grilled in the cases which were pushed under the carpet by the erstwhile regimes.
Besides the ACB, the Enforcement Directorate has also taken keen interest in Kashmir. The ED has questioned the National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah in connection with the multi-crore Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) scam. It didn’t happen in the past, otherwise the JKCA scam is an old case.
The ACB is registering cases on a daily basis and no complaint being overlooked is making people feel that the ground situation is changing. The quick response of the anti-graft agencies is encouraging more and more people to come forward. The work culture in the government offices too seems to have improved.
The complaints about files remaining stuck for months together at one place have declined. The officials have realized that they are being watched and their functioning is being monitored. They don’t want to end up in trouble and are trying to complete the assigned tasks without any delay.
The present dispensation in J&K is trying to make people comfortable and it appears that work culture has improved.
Officials haven’t changed. They are the same people who used to work in the political regimes but their style of functioning has changed as they have been made accountable.
They know that axe can fall on them on the charges of dereliction of their duties.
