Total confusion: Attack on DDC contestant furthers divide Gupkar alliance | | | Early Times Report jammu, Dec 6: Even as a candidate for the ongoing District Development Council elections was recently injured when unidentified terrorists fired upon him in Kashmir, the so called Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration displayed confusion on how to react to the dastardly act. The fissures in the PAGD became even visible on December 4, when the DDC candidate, Anees Ul Islam of Apni Party was injured after unknown gunmen fired at him in Sagam area of Kokernag in south Kashmir's Anantnag district. He suffered a bullet wound in his arm. Sources said the constituent parties of the PAGD have raised objections over as to why the alliance failed to take a strong stand against the attack. The PAGD couldn't take a united stand even on how to react to the attack and ended up looking even more divided. While former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah and Peoples Conference, President, Sajjad Lone took to twitter to individually condemn the attack, the Peoples Democratic Party, President, Mehbooba Mufti remained conspicuous for her silence. Interestingly, though Mehbooba Mufti expressed concerns over the farmers' protests in the national capital, her twitter handle remained silent on the attack on democracy in her homeland. Ironically, on the fateful day, even though she retweeted a picture of a Kashmiri boy using Kangri, she couldn't find time for the wounded contestant from south Kashmir. Sources said the PAGD leaders are not having proper coordination even on such sensitive issues. "Given the sensitivity of the matter, they (PAGD) members should have reacted in one common voice to condemn the attack, but they couldn't do it due to growing differences and divide," said a political analyst. It is pertinent to mention that cracks have surfaced in the PAGD since the announcement of the DDC polls. Even in the summer capital of Srinagar the candidates of National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party are contesting against each other, mocking at the claims of the PAGD that the constituent parties are united in elections. Despite repeated attempts, the PAGD members were not available for comments. |
