Kashmir becomes ‘crime hub’, champions of morality silent | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Dec 27: Some of the shocking incidents of crime as witnessed by Kashmir in the recent past have seemingly turned the valley into crime hub while the so called champions of morality and human rights abuse are silent. In the last few months, some of the spine chilling incidents of crime were reported from Kashmir. The recent one is wherein the stepbrother killed his sister on the eve of her wedding in Srinagar. As per the Jammu and Kashmir Police, a family in Saida Kadal locality of Srinagar killed their own daughter on prayer mat only to grab her property. To hide the murder, the family had told the people that she had committed suicide. Had Srinagar police not acted, the blind murder case would never be solved. But the champions of morality and human rights, especially the local politicians and the civil society groups, remained silent on the issue. From former Chief Ministers like Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti to civil society groups, everyone preferred silence. Prior to this gruesome murder, a 21-year-old girl was gang-raped and murdered in Kulgam area of south Kashmir. The victim had gone to attend a wedding where from two Kashmiri men had abducted her and gang raped her on October 31, 2020. The victim, who was wounded in the assault, remained hospitalized for around a month where she succumbed to her injuries. Interestingly, there was no hue and cry over the incident. Though the so called champions of morality have been demanding death penalty for such cases from elsewhere India, all of them have been silent on the rising crime graph in Kashmir. Observers said many of the voices want such shocking incidents to be downplayed by the society lest it damages the “image of Kashmir.” “Most of the Kashmiris raise voice against crime outside Kashmir but want to be silent on crime in their own homeland,” said a sociologist. |
