Sun out yet after another chilly night, wet weather predicted in Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Jan 2: Sun was out on Saturday after yet another chilly night due to below freezing temperature in the Kashmir valley, where a fresh Western Disturbance (WD) is already active and could result in isolated very light rain or snow on upper reaches during the next 24 hours. Most parts of the world famous Dal Lake, particularly near banks and interior areas, remained frozen in Srinagar, where the minimum temperature witnessed minor improvement and settled at minus 5.9 degree, about four notches below normal. Pahalgam, the famed health centre in south Kashmir, was coldest at minus 8.4 degree, a Met department spokesman said on Saturday. There was no relief for the people in Ladakh region, where majority of water bodies remained frozen. A fresh WD, originating in Arabian sea and entering via Afghanistan and Pakistani is active in the region, he said , adding that there could be very light isolated rain or snow rain or snow on upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and weather will be mainly dry in Ladakh and Gilgit and Baltistan in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) during the next 24 hours. He said there could be scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rain, snow and thundershowers during the subsequent two days. He warned of scattered heavy rain, snow and thundershowers in Kashmir and Jammu on January 5, 2021. Water in the world famous Dal Lake near banks and interior areas remained frozen this morning. Though Shikarawalas face some difficulties, but frozen parts became a major attraction for tourists and locals. Srinagar, the summer capital, witnessed some improvement in the minimum temperature and settled at minus 5.9 degree, against yesterdays minus 6.4 degree when the normal is 2.1 degree on this day of the 40-day Chilai Kalan, the harshest period of winter. However, after the chilly night, sun provided much needed relief to people in the city who were seen basking in the sun in parks, gardens and bank of Lake and other places. Spokesman said the sky would be generally cloudy to light snowfall and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 6 degree and minus 2 degree respectively in Srinagar during the next 24 hours. World famous ski resort of Gulmarg, major attraction for tourists, skiers and other adventure lovers, witnessed about 1.5 degree improvement in the minimum temperature. Against yesterdays minus 9 degree minimum temperature, it was minus 7.5 degree, 1.3 notches below normal. Due to sunny day, the maximum temperature there was 1.6 degree above normal. However, Pahalgam recorded further drop and settled at minus 8.4 degree against yesterdays minus 7.8 degree, he said. Tourist resort of Kokernag recorded 6.4 degree minimum temperature followed by Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir and Kupwara minus 6.1 degree. Drass, the second coldest place in the world recorded about minus 27 degree while it was minus 20.4 degree at border town of Kargil on Srinagar-Leh national highway which has been closed for winter months from yesterday. The maximum temperature at Kargil was minus 5.5 degree yesterday. At Leh the minimum temperature was minus 15.6 degree while the maximum temperature yesterday was minus 3.8 degree. The sky would be generally cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around minus 4 degree and minus 13 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Leh. In POK, Skardu was coldest at minus 13.2 degree minimum temperature, Gilgit minus 7 degree, Muzaffarabad 0.2 degree and Mirpur 3.5 degree. |
