A leading private bank forces its employees to improve deposits, does little to give loans
RBI directive to private banks to increase credit flow falls flat

JEHANGIR RASHID
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jan 5: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directive to the private banks operating in the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir to increase the credit flow has few takers as a leading private bank is 'coercing' its employees in Kashmir to improve its deposits in the valley.
Sources while quoting the employees of the bank told Early Times that the higher ups of the bank are forcing them (employees) to increase the deposits while doing nothing on improving the credit flow. They said the employees are being pushed to the wall in this regard with some of the employees thinking of leaving their job.
"A top rank officer of the bank based in Jammu makes it sure that valley based employees are always kept on toes. The officer would call the staff after 7:30 PM and up to that time the employees are expected to be in the branches. The officer harasses the staff as and when he receives the answer that the deposits have not been up to the mark," said sources.
Sources said that while targets are set for achieving the deposits the bank officers fail to give satisfactory reply when the employees raise the issue of disbursal of loans to the customers of the bank. They said that it gets difficult for the employees to achieve their target since the bank has 'faltered' in its credit flow.
"In this era of cut throat competition it is very difficult to motivate a person to open an account at the bank. The first question that is posed by the prospective customers is about the loan options available with the bank. Since the loan facility is almost negligible the employees are not able to motivate people to open the account in the bank," said sources.
Sources said that the existing customers of the bank living in the Srinagar city are quite perplexed since the main branch is located in the busy area located adjacent to the Jehangir Chowk or Exhibition Chowk. They said the facilities being provided by the bank are not up to the mark when compared to the other banks operating in Jammu & Kashmir.
"The officers of the bank are interested in improving the deposit ratio while doing very little to improve the facilities at the bank branches especially in Kashmir. The main branch of the bank has no parking facility and the customers face difficulty in parking their vehicles when they visit the bank," said sources.
Sources said that the top ranking officer looking after the operations in Jammu & Kashmir has made it a habit to harass the employees including the female staff. He wants the employees to take his calls all the time irrespective of the time or the location, the sources said adding that many employees are contemplating to leave their job.
