Power continues to elude Kashmiris | | | Jeelani Malik
We have seen time from “Lalteen”(oil lamp) to “Bijli” (bulb) as time moved towards the 21st century which has really marked the rise of global economy. The entire works of humanity from early times to present are estimated to be at Exabyte’s of data. The advancement of the sum total of human knowledge and information continues to grow at an exponential rate. However, this all remained even a dream to the Kashmir valley as people still have to face challenges in getting 24hrs of “Electricity” (Power), we still have to manage our stuff accordingly with that schedule of Electricity, we have to shout time & again has electricity been restored. We still don’t have electricity, how long we have to wait to have 24 hours of electricity, this is the question I do ask myself every now & then! As different representatives who do represent us as far as government is concerned, do promise for providing 24 hours of electricity, but at last nothing on ground. As Kashmir is the northern most geographical region of the Indian subcontinent situated between Great Himalayas & Pir Panjal Range, the place is surrounded by huge mountains, which remain covered with snow throughout the year. There are many glaciers in the region as well, Kashmir is known for its beautiful lakes and rivers. There are number of lakes & rivers in each district of valley, these waterways are a source of water to agricultural land and to produce electricity. Being rich with these resources we still face power cuts (turn in electricity supply). As we continue to listen from the department about Hydropower projects, which is the most common type of electricity generations, hydroelectric power plant uses a dam on a river to store water in a reservoir, we have been blessed with enough resources to produce electricity through this concept of hydropower. Globally hydropower generation has reached to 16.6% in 2015 of total electricity & 70% of all renewable electricity. Hydropower is being produced by 150 countries and the cost incurred is relatively low which makes it a competitive source of renewable electricity. When we go back into the history these hydropower generation were being used since ancient times to grind flour and perform other tasks. And then in late 18th century this has got industrial revolution. We every now & then do listen that there would be development now! There would be jobs now! There would be revolution now! Is it really making sense out of this truth- which is we don’t have power (electricity) here, running in 21st century. People do believe and ready to pay as per usage of electricity, however there is an answer from the concern department as well “we have only .....MW’s with us while as consumption is .....MW’s”, this is for every next question we ask... We always have to keep hope for good to happen, as hope is the essence of life, things go out of hand and beyond of our control many times, Hope helps us keep the fight on and improve the chances of making our life better. As of now we do understand certain challenges of department as well, however we also have be in real sense that we do run through 21st century, were world has reached beyond our imaginations, and we are still being deprived of 24hrs of electricity..!!! |
