PAGD set to become history
1/21/2021 11:01:28 PM
Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone saying goodbye to Peoples' Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) has ended the so-called unity among the Kashmir centric parties that had joined hands to fight for the so-called bigger cause.
Now, it appears that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may also follow the footsteps of the Peoples Conference as PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti reportedly too is under pressure to divorce the alliance.
Since the day results of the District Development Council (DDC) elections have been declared, Mehbooba Mufti and National Conference leaders have not met. They have not come face to face with each other. Not, a single joint statement has been issued by these parties. The National Conference after winning more than 65 DDC seats has emerged as the single largest party within the PAGD and has made it clear that it wants to dominate the other partners. The PC has said no to the domination and has moved out.
It appears that Mehbooba too will have to do the same as the NC has been projecting the win in DDC elections as the victory of a single party only. It has not given any credit to other alliance partners.
The NC leaders have made it clear that they want to head most of the District Development Council (DDC) Boards and they don't want to compromise on it. The PDP with just 27 seats is not in a position to enter into any sort of bargain with the National Conference. So it will have to remain content with what it gets.
Despite the date for the election of chairmen for the DDC boards coming closer, the PAGD leaders have not met to chalk out the modalities. It's clear that the NC is not interested in carrying forward the alliance. Had the NC leadership been interested in allowing the PAGD to carry on, it would have responded to the allegation of the proxy candidates that were levelled by the PC leaders. The NC leaders have also maintained distance from PDP and other small parties of the amalgam.
It appears that NC is creating such a situation that it wants all the PAGD allies to leave on their own. Sajad felt the heat and left. Mehbooba too may feel the same soon and would be left with no other option other than to call it quits. It appears that PAGD will become a history soon.
