No statehood for time being | | | Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made it clear that Jammu and Kashmir would get the statehood back at an appropriate time and till then the politicians in J&K will have to remain content with the region functioning as a union territory. Former chief ministers of J&K Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have announced it well in advance that they won’t contest the assembly elections till statehood is restored. There is a strong reason for both these leaders stating that they won’t contest the elections. In a union territory all the decisions are taken by the Lieutenant Governor and he is the boss. Even after the assembly elections are held politicians won’t enjoy full powers as they used to when J&K was a state. So leaders like Omar and Mehbooba don’t want to work with curtailed powers. J&K’s transition into a union territory has proved to be a blessing for a common man as he has felt the change in the ground situation. His works no longer get stuck as the people sitting in the government offices are aware of the fact that they are being watched and they cannot get away with anything anymore. The Centre’s experiment to turn J&K into a Union Territory has worked and it wants the arrangement to continue. During the past one and half year many things have come to fore that have proven it beyond doubt that J&K had been mismanaged. At present the Centre has shifted its entire focus on development of Jammu and Kashmir. It appears that New Delhi is in no mood to empower the politicians and wants to handle the J&K affairs on its own. History stands testimony to the fact that the Kashmir centric politicians, who ruled J&K in the past didn’t pay much attention towards the development of the erstwhile state and raked the issues which created confusion and uncertainty. It’s after 70- long years that people are realizing what good governance means and if the government is interested how fast can things change. After the Union Home Minister’s statement in the Parliament one thing is clear that J&K’s statehood will be restored but how long it will take depends upon the Centre as Prime Minister Narendra Modi led government seems to be in no mood to appease anyone. It wants to handle J&K in its own way. |
