Parties are about leaders
2/17/2021 11:35:46 PM
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by Mehbooba Mufti has got yet another jolt as one of her trusted lieutenants, Peerzada Mansoor, has said goodbye to her party.
The PDP, which had emerged as an alternative to the National Conference in Kashmir, has become irrelevant just within a few years after the death of the party founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who believed in carrying everyone along.
After donning the mantle of her father Mehbooba as a leader couldn’t keep her flock together as she raked the issues which didn’t fall in her domain. She tried to project herself as the tallest leader of J&K and made every attempt to dictate terms to everyone including her own party men. But her moves backfired.
After the BJP pulled out from the coalition led by her in 2018, she threatened that it would have severe consequences. But her utterances hardly made any difference. Her party fell like a pack of cards and as on date most of her trusted lieutenants have deserted her.
Mehbooba’s move to bring Kashmir centric parties on one platform didn’t yield any result as the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) has ended up in a fiasco.
At this point of time Mehbooba has been left alone and she has been left with no one to fall back upon. There are many reasons for the PDP’s downfall but the biggest is the failure of Mehbooba Mufti to act as a leader. Despite being a mainstream politician she behaved as a spokesperson of the separatists. She left no stone unturned to send a message to the people sitting across the Line of Control that her party can become an extension of Hurriyat Conference in Jammu and Kashmir.
The nationalist people who had joined PDP had no other option other than to leave the party as they didn’t want to be labeled as anti-nationals. Many PDP leaders had to pay a heavy price for Mehbooba not keeping her mouth shut. Her utterances led to most of the PDP leaders facing the music.
Had Mehbooba followed the footsteps of her late father, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, her party would have remained intact.
After she took over as the first woman chief minister of the erstwhile J&K State she had an opportunity to lead from the front and set an example but she messed up the chance she had got. PDP’s debacle has proven it beyond doubt that it’s the leaders who make or break the parties.
