Weather improves after 4 days of rain, snow in Kashmir
3/15/2021 11:42:45 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 15: There was some respite from chilly weather conditions on Monday as sun players hide and seek after four days of rain and snow in Kashmir valley, where the night temperature remained above normal.
However, another spell of wet weather is predicted from Tuesday under the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance (WD), which is expected to hit the region during the next 24 hours.
A Met department spokesperson said that weather will mainly remain dry on Monday in Kashmir valley.
He said a fresh WD, which originated from the Arabian Sea and is approaching the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan, would hit J&K late on Monday evening. "Under the influence of this WD, light to moderate rain and snow would occur at most places in the valley for three days from Tuesday," he said.
The spokesperson said the weather woes will continue as a fresh WD is expected to hit the region on March 21 that would result in more rain and snow.
Sun played hide and seek resulting in much need relief for the people from chilly weather conditions in the summer capital, Srinagar, where the night temperature also witnessed some improvement. Against 5.8 degree recorded on Sunday, the night temperature in the city settled at 6.3 degree, which is over 3 degree above normal. The water on the roads has receded in the city, resulting in normalization of vehicular and pedestrian movement.
He said skies will be cloudy to very light rain and thundershowers during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperature is expected to settle at 10 degree and 6 degree, respectively.
Skies remained cloudy in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, which received about 2 feet of fresh snowfall last week. The ski resort was the only place in the valley where the night temperature settled below freezing point. Against minus 2.2 degree recorded on Sunday, the mercury dipped and settled at minus 2.6 degree, which is slightly above normal. "The weather remained cloudy throughout the day on Monday in the ski resort. But, despite chilly weather conditions, the tourists are out on ski slopes enjoying different activities," a hotelier told UNI over the phone.
He said the ski resort, which is about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, witnessed a huge influx of tourists this winter season after zero business during the last two years. "Most of the hotels are booked to April end in Gulmarg," he added.
World famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, also experienced chilly weather conditions due to overcast conditions on Monday. The night temperature the resort dipped about 2 degree and settled at minus 1.3 degree, which is slightly below normal.
The night temperature at Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag settled at 6 degree, 1.7 degree and 4.1 degree, respectively.
