Mehbooba Biggest Loser
3/21/2021 11:28:26 PM
Kashmir centric parties winding up the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) is a big jolt for the Peoples Democratic Party president, Mehbooba Mufti.
It was at Mehbooba's behest the conglomerate headed by the National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah was formed. When the PAGD came into being last year its leaders claimed that they have nothing to do with power and they will fight for a bigger cause. But the PDP, NC and other parties jumped into the poll fray soon after the District Development Council (DDC) elections were announced. Though, PDP, NC, Peoples Conference and other parties fought these elections under one banner but soon after the tickets were distributed the cracks became wide and open. The NC got the lion's share, which led to other partners turning hostile.
Soon after the DDC poll results were declared, Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone pulled out from the conglomerate accusing the NC of backstabbing it by fielding proxy candidates in its stronghold, Kupwara district in north Kashmir.
After the poll results have been declared the PAGD constituents have not even met once. Dr Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah are maintaining distance from Mehbooba Mufti. Unofficially the PAGD has been winded up. The parties that had come together are not even looking towards each other. The leaders who used to talk about getting everything back are finding it hard to keep themselves relevant. They have lost their addresses and are unsure about their future prospects.
Mehbooba after being released from detention made every possible attempt to project herself as the tallest leader in Kashmir. But she failed miserably as her close aides deserted her. Today her party stands at crossroads. Her attempt to take the support of the NC and other parties didn't work as the Valley based parties seem least interested in her brand of politics. No one wants to end up in trouble by supporting her ideology, which is inclined towards separatists.
The PAGD's collapse was inevitable since the day it came into being. The parties that had come together had nothing in common except their desire to somehow reach near the corridors of power. Most of the Kashmir centric parties have realized that they cannot achieve anything by annoying New Delhi. They have fallen in line and have chosen their path. Mehbooba has been the biggest loser as she stands alone and isolated.
