JAMMU, Mar 26: The lethargic approach of the Irrigation Department can be gauged from the fact that the work progress of desilting of the Ranbir Canal has been going at a snail's pace which is unlikely to be completed before Baisakhi.
Sources in the department told Early Times that the desilting of the Ranbir Canal has become a golden goose for the department as it has been observed that the desilting of the canal remains uncompleted every year and it is done just for the sake of cleaning.
"Every year crores are spent in desilting process but on ground the condition of canal speaks something else, which clearly indicates towards embezzlement of funds," they said further adding that there is no supervision from third party to ensure proper desilting, which is the main reason that the cleaning process is taken for granted by the department.
The senior citizen urged the Deputy Commissioner Jammu to keep an eye on the work, so that the quality of work and amount spent by Irrigation Deptt must be cross checked, as Baisakhi is approaching, which is the deadline for opening of this canal. With the present pace of desilting, it is impossible to complete work before Baisakhi.
Although several RTI applications have been lodged with the Irrigation Department regarding information about expenditure on desilting but the department doesn't provide information through reply, they said.
Locals appealed to Lieutenant Governor to look into the progress of work and urged that a proper inspection should be done a day before releasing water into this canal. When Early Times contacted the Deputy Commissioner Jammu, he said that he would inquire about it and will instruct the department to complete work within specified time and the expenditure incurred by the department will also be reviewed.
