Party Without Leaders
4/1/2021 11:55:19 PM

Peoples Democratic Party, which had emerged as an alternative for the National Conference in Kashmir, has been left with no leaders who can participate in party functions.
The PDP has cancelled functions that were scheduled to be held in coming days, it cited surge in COVID-19 cases as a reason for cancelling the events. But there are other reasons for the party not being able to go ahead with its programmes. The biggest reason is that most of its leaders have resigned. They have joined the political formations that are secular and want to move on.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) recently filed a charge sheet against the PDP and accused it of providing funds to separatist and secessionist elements in Kashmir to keep the pot boiling in the Valley after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani in 2016. The charges filed by the NIA are serious and if these are proven, the people who used to assert that PDP is hand-in-glove with Hurriyat and other Pakistan stooges.
Close aides of Mehbooba Mufti who used to swear by their affiliation to PDP are not even at talking terms with her due to the PDP chief's habit of poking her nose into matters that don't fall in her domain.
The PDP chief needs to sit back and introspect why everyone, including her own brother (Tasaduq Mufti), deserted her. Mehbooba had made an attempt to take refuge in Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) by bringing together Kashmir centric parties but her attempt has failed as none of the Valley based parties want to remain associated with her. When she was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate recently in connection with a money laundering case, the PAGD maintained silence and no statement was issued to express solidarity with her.
The PDP has hit a dead end; it should stop organizing functions and accept that it has lost relevance and the party doesn't exist anymore. Staging dramas and trying to prove that the party enjoys support of people won't help its cause as the masses also seem least interested in the brand of party's politics. Mehbooba is in a soup and it appears she would be held accountable for the wrongs that were committed during her tenure as the head of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State. She has been denied a passport. The ED is investigating her terror links and the Centre has made it clear that she is no worth. ''
