Fashion Shows In Kashmir

Back to back fashion shows in Kashmir during the past few days made a handful of burqa-clad women take out a silent protest march against the event along the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar.
The protesters had told the reporters that they are not affiliated with any group and have come out on their own to express resentment against the event. These protesters had claimed that such shows push women into “flesh trade.”
The protest by these women and their comments evoked strong reactions from the people from the cross section of the society. Many people snubbed these protesters and conveyed them in clear terms that they should mind their own business rather than indulging in moral policing. Prior to abrogation of Article 370 the so-called chief of Pakistan sponsored Dukhtaran-e-Millat, Aasiya Andrabi, used to spearhead action against the women who used to defy her diktats but after the Centre launched a crackdown against the Pak stooges in the Valley, the activities of radical elements came to an end. Aasiya and her aides have been jailed since then. The question which most people are asking is who had organized the protest against the fashion show. The orchestrators need to be identified and dealt according to law of the land. It was for the first time in the past 30-years that two fashion shows were organized in Kashmir. Since the outbreak of insurgency in Kashmir in 1990, radical elements had instilled fear among the people. The cinema halls were closed, wine shops were ransacked and acid was thrown on women to make them observe the purdah in the initial days of militancy. The cinema halls were opened in later part of 2000 but were closed down again after militants hurled grenades at a few theatres. After the abrogation of Article 370 things have changed in Kashmir. Youth are coming forward to showcase their talent. Participation of young girls and boys in cultural events indicate that youngsters are no more afraid of the gun and they don’t fear the militants anymore. For Kashmir’s generation next the next sky is the limit. They are out to chase their dreams.
Recently, held fashion shows in Kashmir can help the aspiring models to come forward and showcase their talents. Lucky ones can get a break to build their careers.
