Jammu Awaits Equality

After the transition of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir State into a union territory many things have started to move. The present dispensation led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has set the ball rolling to end discrimination with Jammu region.
The Centre has realized that Jammu and Kashmir is not only about Kashmir and Jammu cannot be ignored anymore. During the past 70-years Kashmir centric rulers used different yardsticks to treat Jammu and Kashmir regions. Their only focus was Kashmir and they had nothing to do with Jammu.
The administrative services of the erstwhile State were named as Kashmir Administrative Service (KAS) and police service as Kashmir Police Service (KPS). No attempt was made to rename these services as JKAS and JKPS.
Now, the voices are becoming shriller to change the nomenclature of these services. People of Jammu want that KAS should become JKAS and KPS, JKPS. Similarly the people want Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences Jammu (SKUAST-J) to be rechristened.
The discrimination with Jammu has been inherent since 1947 as the rulers who ruled J&K always put Kashmir on the top and didn’t pay much heed towards the development of Jammu region.
After the Government of India (GoI) scrapped J&K’s special status on August 5, 2019 and bifurcated it into two union territories, people of Jammu were made to believe that they won’t face anymore discrimination as the rule of Kashmir centric leaders has ended. The ongoing delimitation exercise is aimed at bringing Jammu region at par with Kashmir vis-à-vis the distribution of the assembly seats.
Till 2019 Kashmir had more seats in the assembly while Jammu had less. But as soon as the delimitation exercise is over Jammu and Kashmir regions will have equal number of assembly seats.
To begin with the present dispensation in Jammu and Kashmir should make the small changes like changing the nomenclature of the administrative services, changing the name of SKUAST-J. These small steps can lead to the bigger discriminations, which Jammu witnessed during all these years, coming to an end.
The Centre sidelining Kashmir centric leaders is an indication that these leaders are in no position to call shots and they have been made to fall in the line. Jammu is all set to get equal representation as the notion about Kashmir being a priority stands dispelled to a great extent.
