Jammu, Apr 25: Amid claims of a new era of development ushering in Jammu and Kashmir, the residents of Shergarh Lane number 4 have been clamouring for basic amenities in their locality as the administration has virtually failed to ensure the same. The residents of Shergarh Lane number 4 have criticized the Union Territory administration for making tall claims about development but ground reality in the locality is that even basic amenities have not been provided to them so far. The residents informed that proper drains were not available in their locality. “In absence of proper drains on both sides of the lanes, the water discharge from all the households is drained out into the lanes, making pits and remains stagnated”, the residents said, while showing the lanes. They further added that even at those points, where drains have been constructed to some length, they are also choked with all sorts of filth and not properly cleaned. “The blocked drains are breeding ground for worms and insects like flies and mosquitoes who hover around our houses, which would definitely harm the health of residents”, the residents said. Residents also said that since the development of the locality, proper drains have not been constructed or those available were not upgraded. Due to lack of a proper drainage system, the sewerage water remained stagnated outside the houses of the residents which caused various types of health issues. The residents also castigated the concerned authorities for their failure to provide proper lanes in the locality. “Even after over seventy years of independence, we people of the locality are bereft of the basic amenity of proper road or lanes, which is so unfortunate”, the locals said, adding that the lane connecting their ward is not metalled and despite repeated appeals to the concerned officials, nothing has been done. The people of the locality also criticized the irregular power and water supply in their area. “On one hand government is claiming of developing Jammu as a smart city but even the localities in the Gandhi Nagar constituency lacks basic amenities from which one can reality check the claims of the government”, the residents said, adding that the pathetic condition of their locality exposes the claims of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. Editor In Chief of Early Times, Munish Gupta expressed solidarity with the residents of the locality and said that providing basic amenities to the residents should be the first priority of the government. “All the residents of the constituency must be treated equally and it is the duty of the government departments to provide basic amenities to the residents, which is their right as they are paying tax”, Gupta said, and appealed the Lieutenant Governor administration to pass instructions to the concerned department to provide basic amenities. |
