‘Political covid jab’ in Kashmir under scanner

Srinagar, Apr 26: A political party in Kashmir has come under scanner for having allegedly administered the Covid vaccine to people below the age group of 45 years before May 1 when the age limit was lowered by the government.
While the central government announced that age limit would be reduced from 45 years to 18 years from May 1, one political party allegedly administered vaccines in the middle of March itself to the youth who didn’t fall in the permissible age limit but were younger than that, that time.
Sources said the political party through a medical agency recently held a camp for the immunization in Srinagar but those who don’t fall in the permissible age limit were given the injections. Posters of a prominent leader from the party were pasted at the event, the witnesses said.
Sources said around two dozen such young persons who didn’t fall in the permissible age limit were benefitted during the camp.
What has come as a shock is that the party which is accused of having held the immunization camp is close to the ruling Bharatiya Janta Party at the center.
“This party is ally in the NDA government and thus how could they do it,” said a politician from the regional party in the know of the matter. Sources said some of the local parties in Kashmir have decided to file a formal complaint in this regard to seek an inquiry.
“The government needs to probe as to how come some political party can take law into its own hands that too when the said party is close the government,” said the politician.
Sources said the party in question looks ahead to expand its base in Kashmir and thus is trying to attract more and more youth towards the party.
Sources said administering the Covid immunization to youth from Kashmir was part of the same strategy.
A senior official said that no such complaint has come to their notice but that the matter would be looked into if a formal complaint comes in.
