COVID curfew enters day 5 in Kashmir; fresh cases, deaths keep piling up | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, May 4: Strict restrictions on the movement of people continued as the COVID curfew entered day five on Tuesday in Kashmir valley, where the healthcare system is overwhelmed as the fresh cases and deaths keep piling up. Meanwhile, after witnessing brisk vehicular movement on Monday in the summer capital, Srinagar, the district administration has up the ante against the COVID curfew violators by imposing fines and seizing vehicles in the city. Essential services were exempted from the lockdown in the valley, where so far 2323 people have been fined and 252 others have been arrested for violating COVID curfew and other guidelines since April 29. However, people on Tuesday alleged that even shops selling vegetables, fruits and meat are being directed to remain closed or face action in the city and other districts. “I had gone out to buy vegetables, but as I reached the vegetable seller, a police vehicle approached and arrested the shopkeeper. There were other fruit and vegetable sellers of our locality, who were already bundled up and put in the police vehicle,” Nisar Ahmad, a resident of Budshah Nagar, said. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Aijaz Asad on Tuesday appealed to the people to stay indoors and come out only in extreme medical emergency in order to break the chain and curtail the spread of COVID-19. Srinagar city, which has recorded maximum fresh positive cases, has been designated as Red Zone while rest of the nine districts have categorized in Orange Zone by the administration, which is seeking cooperation from the public to curtail the spread of COVID-19 by strictly adhering to the lockdown. |
