Two militants killed in Sopore gunfight, searches on: Police

BARAMULLA, May 4: Two militants have been killed in an encounter with the security forces in Nathipora area of Sopore town on Tuesday, while searches are underway, said police.
According to police, there was a specific input about the presence of militants in Natipora area in Sopore town, following information Cordon and Search operation (CASO) was launched in the area to neutralize the militants.
“CASO was launched by a joint team of security forces including army’s 22 RR, SoG, police and CRPF in the area”, the police said.
Reliable sources said that, as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces triggering off the gun battle, after which there was an exchange of fire from both the sides.
However, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone Vijay Kumar has confirmed to newsmen that two militants have been killed in an encounter, the searches were going on till the last reports came in.
Kashmir Zone Police in a tweet said that, two terrorists killed, search going on.
It was also learnt from the sources that a foreign militant, Hamas alias Asrar alias Saria was trapped at the site.
Reports have further said that, the militant was “involved in killing of two councilors and a policeman”
The identification of two slain militants and their affiliation with the outfit was not immediately ascertained.
Pertinently, on March 29, two councilors namely Reyaz Ahmad Peer and Shamas-Ud-Din Peer besides policeman Shafqat Nazir Khan were killed in Sopore in a militant attack.
