LG Admin seeks report over increasing fatalities at GMC Jammu

Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 22: The LG administration in Jammu and Kashmir has sought a detailed report over the increasing number of fatalities due to COVID-19 at Government Medical College Jammu in spite of the fact that the latest facilities have been put in place in the hospital to save precious human lives. As per the figures coming to the fore, till date this month, 1182 COVID-19 -infected patients have died, and out of these, 342 deaths i.e. 29 percent have occurred at GMC Jammu only. Reports informed that the LG administration has sought a detailed report from those at the helm in the hospital over the reason behind spike in the fatalities during the ongoing month.
Sources alleged that the facilities being provided to the COVID-19 infected patients aren’t up to the mark and that the ventilators besides the allied facilities are not up to the mark. There are also reports that shortage of oxygen supply is being reported in hospital’s Covid wards.
Furthermore, allowing a large number of attendants in the hospital is also aggravating the situation, exposing the patients to grave health risks in more ways than one.
Insiders believe that the lack of coordination within the hospital management is also making things difficult to handle at such a crucial juncture. It is being informed that the ICU beds are almost full in the hospital and that a patient dies by the time he/she manages to get an ICU bed.
The scarcity of the staff at the same time is also emerging as a worrisome challenge for the authorities to decrease the graph of fatalities at GMC Jammu.
Early Times newspaper already reported last month that the oxygen consumption had increased manifold with the increase in the number of patients at GMC Jammu, the premier COVID-19 hospital in Jammu city. Oxygen was being supplied to the patients from liquid oxygen plant and the hospital’s own oxygen plant. What had meanwhile set the alarm belling ringing was that till April 01, only 20 to 30 cylinders were being used daily from the plant, which has now increased to 300 to 350. In the liquid oxygen plant, the tank has to be filled after every two days. There are fears that the increase in oxygen demand in Jammu could result in possible health crisis in the division. As per the reports, about 3000 big cylinders are available in stock, of which up to 350 cylinders are being used every day and they are being regularly filled through various units. It has a capacity of 7000 liters per cylinder. Similarly, the liquid oxygen plant has a capacity of 20000 liters, and that GMC is providing oxygen supply to 400 beds, including 8 units including CCU, HDU, isolation, ward 3.
