Politicians need to explain
6/2/2021 11:55:06 PM
The first and second waves of COVID-19 have exposed the poor state of healthcare in Jammu and Kashmir to a hilt.
When both the waves were at peak, hospitals couldn’t accommodate the patient rush as most of the health institutions ran out of space. Pictures about patients gasping for breath in hospital lawns across Jammu went viral.
What’s more astounding is that the portfolio of Health Ministry in the erstwhile J&K state was held by the leaders from Jammu region for 19 long years. These leaders could have done a lot if they wanted but the pandemic has proven it beyond doubt that nothing much was done to uplift the health infrastructure in Jammu region. These leaders need to explain why they couldn’t deliver when they were in power despite all the resources being at their disposal.
The second wave of COVID-19 has started to fizzle out but the experts have warned that the third wave could arrive without any intimation and for that we need to be ready. The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has set up a 500-bedded temporary COVID-19 hospital at Bhagwati Nagar in Jammu and setting up of this facility would reduce the pressure on the hospitals in Jammu region to a great extent. One needs to ask the politicians, who ruled J&K in the past, why they failed to take the initiatives that are being taken by the present dispensation?
It appears that the local leaders, who managed J&K affairs in the past, had no vision and had no plan to develop the health care system in Jammu. In Kashmir there is a huge facility like SK Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) where patients from the Valley get accommodated.
The SKIMS at present is functioning as a dedicated COVID-19 hospital and has helped the people in distress to a great extent. But there is no such facility as SKIMS in Jammu.
Transition of Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory on August 5, 2019, has led to skeletons tumbling out from the cupboards. Masses are asking what politicians did to develop the Jammu region during the past seven decades.
One can understand that the Kashmir centric leaders were never interested in Jammu’s development but the politicians from Jammu could have played their role. Had they taken only a little interest in the issues that touch the skin of a common man, Jammu could have been better equipped to fight the COVID-19.
