Samba, June 6: Many artisans associated with bamboo craft in Samba district are at the verge of starvation as the lockdown imposed to control the second wave of COVID-19 has hit them hard. Artisans told Early Times that many bamboo artisans in the district have not received any kind of government help even after taking the training under Bamboo Mission. “Lockdown and social distancing have separated everyone from each other,” they said. Bamboo artisans are engaged in manufacturing many products, but these days they are not finding any buyers due to which they have been pushed to a wall. In the Katera area of the district, artisans make bamboo materials including baskets, chairs, dustbins, fans, file covers, etc. According to bamboo artisan Ashok Kumar, there goods are not being sold as the market are closed. “As soon as my family wakes up in the morning, we start making bamboo items. But during the past one month we have restricted our activities,” Kumar added. He appealed to the government to come for their rescue in these times and provide financial help to the families of artisans associated with bamboo craft. |
