Govt. Degree college Vijaypur organises one day workshop on world oceans day
6/9/2021 12:22:13 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Jun 8: GDC Vijaypur, today organized one day workshop on World Oceans Day, 2021 through online mode. The Principal of the college, Prof. (Dr.) Sangeeta Sudan, shared her views on this auspicious day as “Oceans are the presents from God and we must take care of them by being more responsible”.
She further said that on this auspicious day let’s join hands to protect the largest water body surrounding us, as Covid-19 pandemic is a sharp reminder of how we are all intimately connected to each other and to nature.
As we work to end the pandemic and build back better, we have once in a generation opportunity and responsibility to correct our relationship with oceans as we rely on them for food, livelihoods, transport and trade.
Prof. Poonam Kundan, Convenor-Ecoclub addressed the students online and gave presentation on the theme “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods”. She quoted “Oceans are not just water bodies, they are our source of life and it is time we protect and save them”.
In her presentation, she explained oceans are the lungs of our planet and a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere. Oceans are the largest Carbon sink and play a vital role in regulating the global climate. Due to various anthropogenic activities, oceans are becoming more acidic, putting marine biodiversity, essential food chains and marine ecosystems in threat. Each year, billions of pounds of trash and other pollutants enter the ocean and it results in more plastic than fish in our oceans.
She further added that awareness activities should be raised to conserve it and rescue it from the eventual degradation that is caused by our careless activities as together we can protect and restore our oceans. She also motivated students to go for awareness campaign through various social platforms.
Students enthusiastically participated and circulated various slogans, posters and messages pertaining to saving oceans. Many of the students shared their views also as to how human activities like dumping plastic, garbage, oil leaks etc. are responsible for pollution load on our oceans. The whole event was coordinated by Prof Poonam Kundan (Convenor, Ecoclub GDC Vijaypur).
