Jammu, Jun 12: GDC Vijaypur today celebrated "World Day Against Child Labour",by organising an online lecture on "Prohibition of child labour" with the aim to spread awareness about the illegal practice of child labour that still exists. "Act Now:End child Labour" is the theme of this year's World Day Against Child Labour .This year's World Day Against Child labour focuses on the action taken for the elimination of child labour. The ILO (International Labour Organisation) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. The day is used to spread awareness about the harmful mental and physical problems faced by children forced into child labour all over the world. The number of children in child labour has risen to 160 million worldwide-an increase of 8.4 million children in the last 4 years due to impact of COVID-19 pandemic. Child Labour is a fallout of many social and economic factors such as poverty ,social norms condoning it, lack of decent work opportunities for adults and adolescents migration and emergencies .This leads to social inequalities and discrimination. There is a significant rise in the number of children between 5 to 11 years in child labour and they now account for over half of the total global figure. The number of children between 5 to 11 exposed to hazardous work has risen to 6.5 million to 79 million since 2016. Dr. Sangeeta Sudan, Principal of the college exhorted that child labour is a crime. When a child is asked or forced to work that deprives him/her from his/her childhood activities. Students enthusiastically participated by giving their views by drawing posters and by making presentations. The whole event was coordinated by Renuka Kundal(Department of Political Science).
