EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, June 16: Sangeet Natak Akademi’s scholarship holder, diligent theatre artist Neeraj Kunder from M.P. featured today at Natrang’s National Theatre Talk Show, ‘Young Voices of Theatre’ today who shared his inspirational views with the global audience at the Facebook page of Natrang Jammu.
Born in Sidhi (Madhya Pradesh) Neeraj Kunder learnt the nuances of Sanskrit and folk plays from Kavalam Narayana Panikkar under a scholarship scheme of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. He has been instrumental in the creation of hundreds of Lok Kala Grams (folk art villages) in and around Sidhi and resurrected the dying folk arts of the region through documentation and re-experimentation. In 2013 he was honoured with Pyare Mohan Sahay Memorial Award for theatre direction. Presently he is working on writing, direction and documentation and re-experimentation with the Folk Art forms of the region.
In an enriching conversation with Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee actor and Natrang’s senior artist Anil Tickoo, Neeraj narrated his journey of theatre, he informed that apart from being a theatre artist/activist who is devoted to the cause of preservation of folk arts, Neeraj is acting as a healthy bridge between the folk artists and the government machinery.
He also raises the issues of public interest as an activist and his becoming an activist was also related to local needs. In 2014, when thousands of fish died in a dam in Sidhi, he discussed it with friends and did a street play on it. People asked, 'Why don't you clean the dam yourself?' In enthusiasm, he started doing it with the help of a few companions. When news of this work started appearing in some newspapers, and people reached there, the Dam was eventually cleaned. He believes in exploring the might of theatre and use it for the betterment of society.
