Fulfill Old Promises

Promise made by then Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Satya Pal Malik after August 5, 2019 that 50,000 unemployed youth will be provided employment within a few months has fallen flat.
Since J&K’s transition into a Union Territory only 18000 posts have been advertised and recruitment process is still incomplete.
Soon after the Centre scrapped J&K’s special status, the helmsmen had claimed that a new dawn had broken out for youth and their dreams would get wings as they would be provided with numerous opportunities to build their careers. But nothing of that sort has happened during the past two years. Youth continue to struggle and are finding it hard to make their ends meet. They have no idea about what the future holds for them.
NITI Aayog’s latest index of States and Union Territories (UTs) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) stated that the unemployment rate in Jammu and Kashmir has increased during the past one year.
The question is why the government has failed to expedite the recruitment process for the vacant posts? Why are youth being made to wait? Has J&K’s transition into a Union Territory really helped the people? It’s unfortunate that J&K people are still being fed with slogans. Everyday a new announcement is made about the opportunities being created but it seems that these remain confined to papers only. Many qualified youth are on the verge of crossing the overage limit and are waiting for something to happen.
The Lieutenant Governor has announced that in order to increase the presence of youth engagement at the Panchayat level youth clubs will be established in every Panchayat across Jammu and Kashmir for constructive activities and addressing all the concerns of the young generation.
It was announced that in the first phase 22,500 Youth from 4290 Panchayats will be engaged in the youth clubs and government would incurring expenditure to the tune of Rs.12 Crore for this initiative.
There is no harm in taking new steps but before moving ahead old promises need to be fulfilled. Jobs announced in 2019 need to be advertised and filled. It’s the only way to restore the faith of people in the administration. Making announcements and then forgetting about these is creating a feeling of mistrust between a common man and the government. This concern needs to be addressed as unemployment is the burning issue.
